Standing Seam Metal Roofing: The Ultimate Guide for Florida Coastal Homes

Standing seam metal roofing has existed in some form for over 200 years — and for good reason. It is one of the most durable, weather-resistant roofing systems ever developed. In Florida's coastal environment — where salt air, 170 mph wind potential, and relentless UV combine to destroy lesser materials — it performs at an extraordinary level.

Here's everything you need to know before making this investment.

What Makes It "Standing Seam"

Standing seam refers to the raised interlocking seams that run vertically from eave to ridge. Unlike exposed-fastener metal panels (screws visible from outside), standing seam panels lock together and clip to the decking with concealed fasteners — the finished roof has no exposed screw heads. This means no penetrations in the metal field to leak, no fasteners exposed to UV degradation, and a dramatically cleaner aesthetic.

Material Choices: Aluminum vs. Galvalume

.032 Aluminum Snap Lock: The premium choice for coastal Florida. Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant — it won't rust in salt air the way galvanized steel will. The .032 gauge provides excellent rigidity and dent resistance while remaining lighter than steel. This is our recommendation for any property within 5 miles of saltwater.

24GA Galvalume Steel: Galvalume (zinc-aluminum alloy coating over steel) provides strong corrosion resistance at a lower cost than aluminum. Excellent performance in inland locations. For true beachfront or waterfront properties, aluminum is the better long-term investment.

Profile Options

Hurricane Performance

Standing seam metal has one of the strongest post-hurricane performance records in residential roofing. The concealed clip system allows panels to expand and contract with temperature changes without stressing fasteners. In high-wind events, there are no exposed fastener heads to act as wind uplift points. Tested systems carry NOA approvals for 170+ mph wind zones across our service area.

Metal Alliance 100SL (FL29523) and 155SL (FL30780) are our primary product lines — both carry current Florida Product Approvals for our service counties.

What to Expect on Cost

Standing seam metal is a premium roofing system. On a typical South Florida residential installation, expect to invest $28–$38 per square foot installed for .032 aluminum, depending on roof complexity, pitch, and panel length. This is more than entry-level tile — but comparable to premium tile systems when you account for the lower long-term maintenance cost and 40–50 year lifespan.

Color and Finish

Kynar 500 / PVDF coated panels carry a 40-year fade warranty and resist salt air, UV, and thermal shock better than polyester coatings. For coastal applications, always specify Kynar-coated panels. Color selection is wide — from classic standing seam copper simulation to contemporary charcoal, slate, and coastal blue-gray tones.

💡 One thing buyers sometimes don't factor: metal roofs are extremely loud in hard rain if not properly insulated. A quality synthetic underlayment and, in some cases, ridge ventilation, dramatically reduces this. Mention this to your contractor during design — it's an easy fix if addressed before installation.

We design and install standing seam systems across South Florida and the Caribbean. If you're considering metal, we'll walk you through every profile, color, and material option and give you a complete proposal with product specifications and NOA documentation.
